“Oh my” was said often on Sunday as we traveled down the
Canyon toward Batopilas. The road ahead
of us was unbelievable. Hairpin turns
that required 3 and 4 point moves. We
held our breath on many of them, but the scenery was beautiful. Looking at the
homes on the hillsides, we wondered how in the world they could survive in a
home and a location like that. After several hours we met up with the group going back up
and we had only a few minutes to “catch up” on the news of the other group and
them with us.
Sergio said we were having
peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for lunch.
When we arrived at our location for lunch, we were told to stay at the
bottom of the hill till called. We
wondered what was taking them so long. But when we climbed the hill, we said “oh
my” when we saw a long row of white linen covered tables and linen napkins,
wine and juices ready for us. We were in an orchard of fruit trees of various kinds. The staff had a delicious meal all prepared
for us and we enjoyed diskada (hot dish), cheese quesadillas, avocado guacamole
and fresh tangerines.
A Tarahumera
family had been invited to join us and it was a thrill to meet them. Several hours later, we arrived in Batopilas, and quickly
forgot our trepidations of the drive when we saw the Mexican villa where we would
be staying. The place is totally
charming and unlike anything most of us have ever seen. We are excited for what
is ahead tomorrow but what a day today has been.
